Before you order
- Measure the grass, not the lot. A quarter-acre lot is often well under 10,000 sq ft of lawn once you take out the house, driveway and beds. A free satellite map tool with an area measure works well.
- Find your steepest slope. Compare it to the rating, and to the lower edge rating if the maker gives one. See slope ratings.
- Look up for the sky. Heavy tree cover and tall walls can block satellite signal for RTK mowers. See wire vs RTK vs vision.
- Count the zones. Front yard, back yard and a side strip are three zones. Each one adds travel time.
Safety, every time it runs
- Kids and pets off the lawn while it mows. Obstacle sensors and cameras reduce the risk. They do not remove it. Schedule mowing for times when nobody is playing outside.
- Never lift or tip it while it is on. Stop it and turn it off first. Wear gloves when you change blades.
- Check for recalls. Search your model on CPSC.gov and register the mower with the maker so they can reach you.
- Read the manual's safety section. It is the only place that covers your exact model.
